Outdoor Education

Year 8

The natural, irregular and challenging environment, help kids learn to recognise, assess and negotiate risk, build confidence and self-efficacy.

Outdoor Education provides students with the knowledge, skills and motivation to pursue outdoor activities in a safe and responsible manner. Students will develop awareness of minimum impact techniques and responsibility for self, others and the environment. Leadership, cooperation, communication and teamwork are emphasised through various challenges.

The Year 8 Outdoor Education Program consists of the following units:

Bushcraft, bush cooking, bush walking, fire building, navigation, orienteering, roping skills, abseiling, experiential learning activities and philosophy, indigenous cultural studies, place-based learning and an overnight camp at Sandy Cape in Week 8, Term 3.

Course Requirements:

  • Complete the Statement of Commitment Form.
  • Students will need to complete a Swim Competency Test in class. This will consist of the following:
    • 200m continuous swim with NO assistance (no floatation aids, kickboards, fins/flippers or wetsuits etc.)
    • 3 minutes treading water
    • 7m+ underwater swim
      (A rashie must be worn – does not need to be an ODE Rashie. Can be one you already own.)
  • A genuine interest in outdoor activities and the environment

Additional Course Fee

This course/subject attracts an additional fee which is listed in the Schedule of Fees and Charges. The fee will be invoiced on your Family fee account.
