Specialised Programs

Our College is only a ‘stones throw’ away from the Indian Ocean so a Surf Science program fits perfectly into our curriculum.

Surf science

Many young Western Australians are drawn to the ocean for a number of recreational reasons whether it be for swimming, sailing, fishing or surfing. We chose to focus on developing a program around surfing and it has been extremely well received. The program is broken into three areas: theory, fitness and practical surfing sessions.

Surf Coaching: Surf skills are introduced and developed once per week before school. In addition, students are encouraged to continue their surfing through Interhouse and Interschool events. Students will also be exposed to Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) to supplement their surf skills.

Fitness Lessons: Focus on the strength, endurance, flexibility and agility required to improve surfing performance. Cross training and video analysis, including the use of “Streetboardz”, integrating the latest coaching techniques from Surfing Australia. In addition, extension physical activities are included to develop all facets of fitness and foster enjoyment of lifelong participation in physical activity.

Theory Lessons: Cover surf safety, weather, equipment for surfing, surf skills, rules of the surf, competition surfing and surf culture.

Additional Course Fee: Approximately $450 (cost subject to change) payable in December 2019 before commencement of the course.

Course Length: One period per week plus one surf coaching session per week before school.

Requirements: College Sports Uniform. All equipment provided until students’ progress to a level where they can acquire gear specific to individual needs.

Additional Information: Students who wish to apply for the Year 7 course should complete the application form on the school website as places are limited. Suitable applicants will be interviewed in Term 4, 2019 before places are awarded for 2020.
