Computer Science (ATAR)

The Computer Science ATAR course focuses on the fundamental principles, concepts and skills within the field of computing and provides students with opportunities to develop flexibility and adaptability in the application of these, in the roles of developers and users. The underpinning knowledge and skills in computer science are practically applied to the development of computer systems and software, and the connectivity between computers, peripheral devices and software used in the home, workplace and in education is examined. Students develop problem-solving abilities and technical skills as they learn how to diagnose and solve problems in the course of understanding the building blocks of computing.

The course covers programming, data management, databases, system analysis, computer hardware and networking.

Prerequisite: B Grade in Year 10 Computer Systems or following an interview with the Director of Technology.

Pathway: Units 1 and 2 Year 11 lead to Year 12 Units 3 and 4 (ATAR).

Applied Information Technology (General)

Applied Information Technology (General) is a course that will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to make the most of computer software and hardware. They will learn to create, modify, and communicate information responsibly, effectively, and with a deep understanding of the digital landscape. This course offers a strong foundation for advanced studies and various technology-based career paths, ensuring students are well-prepared for the demands of the 21st century. It also enables them to grasp the profound influence of information technology on society.

In Year 11, students will study Units 1 & 2, followed by Units 3 & 4 in Year 12, which focus on:

Unit 1 – Personal communication: Students will learn to use technology to meet their personal needs and develop a range of skills that enable them to communicate effectively using appropriate technologies. They’ll gain knowledge that will help them navigate communication in a personal context.

Unit 2 – Working with others: Students will explore various technologies to manage data, common software applications, and wireless network components required for smooth operation within a small business environment. They’ll also examine the legal, ethical, and social impacts of technology within society.
