Surf Science

The Year 8 course builds on the experiences of the Year 7 Surf Science Course.

Surf coaching:  Further developed through surf coaching once per week before school. In addition, students are encouraged to continue their surfing through Inter-house and Interschool events. Students will also be exposed to Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) to supplement their surf skills.

Fitness lessons:  Focus on the strength, endurance, flexibility and agility required to improve surfing performance. Cross training and video analysis, including the use of “Streetboardz”, integrating the latest coaching techniques from Surfing Australia. Extension physical activities are included to develop all facets of fitness and foster enjoyment of lifelong participation in physical activity.

Theory lessons:  Cover meteorology, history of surfing, board design, surf skills, rules of the surf, competition surfing and surf culture.

Additional Course Fee:  Approximately $450 (cost subject to change).

Course Length: Two periods per week plus one surf coaching session per week before school.

Requirements:  College Sports Uniform. All equipment provided until students’ progress to a level where they can acquire gear specific to individual needs.

Additional Information:  Successful completion of the Year 7 Surf Science course is a requirement. Students who currently do Surf Science must choose this as their first choice. Students who have not completed this course in Year 7 are NOT eligible to choose this course on the subject selection form.

This course leads to Year 9 Surf Science. Students must see Mr Baddock for information about entry to the course or by application (on the college website) if places become available.
